Baking with a 3 year old is not necessarily advisable but it is great fun if they’re in the right mood! I’ve been trying to get my little cousin into helping me cook for ages but he’s just not been interested. I persevered and to my surprise he eventually agreed to help me bake some jam tarts! For those of you that are interested in the baking of the jam tarts then you can find my original blog post here.
The key to baking with a 3 year old is prep. I was very lucky to have my nan around to entertain him whilst I was weighing out all the ingredients and washing down the surfaces ready for us to make a mess. If you fancy making these too you will need:
A preheated oven to gas mark 5
– 150g gluten free flour
– 100g butter (cubed)
– 50g caster sugar
– 50ml cold water
Mix the flour and sugar together in a bowl and then rub in the cubes of butter. To begin with he loved putting his hands in and helping but little progress was made and so I had to quickly jump in and rub the butter in before I lost his attention!
Once the breadcrumbs were formed we made a well in the middle of the bowl and he helped me to pour in the water. Using a knife I brought the mixture together. I then quickly turned the dough out onto a floured surface and kneaded it until it was less sticky (lots of flour is needed if you’re making the gluten free version!). He helped me to roll out the dough and I left it to him to cut out the tarts – he did this very well and proudly showed me each one he had cut out.
Whilst he was busy cutting the tarts I transferred them to a piece of baking paper on a baking tray (we’ve lost our tart trays and so it was a make-do job) and pricked the bottom of each one. We had a painful 10 minutes as he tried to spoon the jam onto the tarts – however every time he put his spoon into the jam pot it came out clean. My patience was beginning to fade a little as this continues and eventually he agreed to let me do it as he realised he wasn’t going to get the hang of it anytime soon!
Here are our finished tarts ready for the oven! I admit we may have got distracted playing and they were in the oven for a lot longer than the recommended 25 minutes! Opps! They still tasted amazing though and he proudly took a box of them home to mummy and daddy.
We’re planning on making some car shaped biscuits next week which we will then decorate with green icing (he’s obsessed with green cars).
